After arriving in Japan in 1981, Fulford’s study of Japanese, his translations for NHK, his work as a language consultant for NHK and JNTO, and ultimately his regional engagement activities nurtured a conviction that traditional Japanese culture was uniquely valuable. He came to believe that it could literally change the world. Fulford also noted the significant challenge of making this value clear to people from different cultural backgrounds. But this is the challenge to which he has devoted his professional life.
